Our University Hosts a Special Lecture on the Civil Code: "How Adults Can Use Voluntary Guardianship to Protect Their Rights"

From May to June 2024, the fourth "Civil Code Publicity Month" and the second Shanghai Rule of Law Culture Festival took place. According to the directives from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Justice, the National Office for Law Popularization, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice and the Shanghai Municipal Office for Law Popularization, the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee for Education and Health Work and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, after careful consideration, had decided to hold the "Civil Code Publicity Month" activities within the city's education system.


In order to adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implement the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and the Second Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, deeply study and promote Xi Jinping's thought on the rule of law, follow President Xi Jinping's important directive to "bring the Civil Code closer to the people and into their hearts," continuously and deeply promote the popularization of the Civil Code and related laws among young people, tell the stories of the Civil Code well, spread the knowledge of the Civil Code, explain the spirit of the Civil Code, enhance the awareness and ability of teachers and students to seek legal solutions and act according to the law, and create a favorable legal environment for the high-quality development of the city's education system, our university held the "Civil Code on Campus" event in the West Conference Room on the second floor of the Foxi Building on the afternoon of 18 June 2024, inviting Mr. Xu Zhoupeng from the China Legal Strategy Institute at East China University of Political Science and Law to deliver a legal education lecture. The lecture was hosted by the Party Committee's and Publicity Department of our university. Members of the No.1 Party Branch of the Administrative Functions, relevant teachers from various functional offices and secondary colleges and departments, and some student representatives attended the lecture.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Xu Zhoupeng, holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Commercial Law from Jilin University. His main research areas are civil and commercial law and health law. He is currently an assistant research fellow at the China Legal Strategy Institute at East China University of Political Science and Law. He has published several papers in core journals such as "Social Science Front" and participated in a number of National Philosophy and Social Sciences Fund projects. In this special lecture on the Civil Code, titled "How Adults Can Use Voluntary Guardianship to Protect Their Rights," Mr. Xu provided an in-depth yet accessible explanation and analysis of specific cases to educate the audience on the relevant knowledge and highlights of the Civil Code. He particularly focused on the characteristics of voluntary guardianship for adults, highlighting the differences between guardianship for minors and adults, and discussing cases related to the establishment of voluntary guardianship agreements for adults.

The lecture aimed to enhance the awareness and ability of teachers and students to seek legal solutions and act according to the law, fostering a culture of respecting, learning, abiding by and using the law. The participating teachers and students expressed that they benefited greatly from the lecture and will further establish a legal mindset, identify legal risks and adhere to legal boundaries in their future studies and work.
