Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, a genius poet and writer of 19th-century Russia, is known as the "Sun of Russian Literature." His works transcend time and space, illuminating the hearts of countless people. 6 June 2024 marks the 225th anniversary of Pushkin's birth, and his literary spirit shines anew in Sino-Russian cultural exchanges.

Teachers and students from the Department of Directing Department at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, with a deep admiration for Russian theatre and Pushkin's literature, embarked on a study tour to Russia. Invited by the Institute of Theatrical Arts named after J. Kobzon, their original production "The Story of Zhu Erdan and Lu Pan from Liaozhai" was successfully performed at the 7th International Festival of Theatre Schools of the BRICS Countries. This festival is a significant international platform for theatrical exchange and cooperation among university students, promoting cultural exchange and showcasing theatrical arts from BRICS countries.

The Department of Directing used theatrical performances to spread the traditional Chinese literature "Liaozhai," and collaborated with students and teachers from theatre schools of the BRICS countries to perform Pushkin's "The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish," fostering cultural exchange and mutual learning. By incorporating elements of traditional Chinese Nuo opera masks and ethnic musical instruments, they delved into themes of human nature, desire and morality. This was a positive exploration of cross-cultural exchange and understanding, presenting a contemporary expression of ancient theatrical culture that received positive feedback on the international stage.

During the day, the teachers and students of the Department of Directing visited the Pushkin Museum to experience the charm of Russian and European art. In the evening, they joined their peers from other theatre schools of the BRICS countries in a parade at the Russian National Economy Achievements Exhibition Park, dressed in traditional costumes. The theatrical performance, study and exchange on this occasion not only broadened the students' perspectives also provided them with a unique opportunity for learning and experience, allowing them to draw new inspiration and insights from the literary spirit of Pushkin.

Pushkin's spirit and literature, like an everlasting sun, illuminate our path in exploring human nature and expressing emotions. Today, let us celebrate the 225th anniversary of Pushkin's birth in the name of theatre, ensuring that Pushkin's spirit lives on the stage, while writing a new chapter of friendship and cooperation between the two schools in the brilliant pages of Sino-Russian cultural exchange.
