At the end of March, the original drama "THE IDEAL OF LIFE IS TO LIVE AN IDEAL LIFE", produced by the Department of Dramatic Literature of the Shanghai Theatre Academy and jointly supported by the Department of Acting (including the Center for Musical Theatre) and the Department of Stage Design, was performed at the Dungun Theatre.

The play selects eight years of life of Comrade Zhang Wentian from his youth, who was one of important leaders in the history of the Chinese Communist Party and born in Pudong, Shanghai. It recreates the quest of the youth, represented by Zhang Wentian, during the "awakening age", who went through trials and tribulations searching for ideals and the truth of national salvation, and ultimately found the bright path of communism. This is not only a dramatized narration and stage presentation of the party's history but also aims to inspire contemporary Chinese youth through the dialogue with the new youth from a century ago, enlightening them on “the meaning of youth" and “the role of the young generation".

The drama "THE IDEAL OF LIFE IS TO LIVE AN IDEAL LIFE" respects historical accuracy while using poetic thinking and freehand brushwork to set characters within a fluid and free temporal and spatial context, focusing on the conflicts of the protagonist's self-confusion amidst changing times. It showcases the noble character of young Zhang Wentian and his arduous journey in pursuit of truth and faith across vast rivers and oceans. The entire play begins with the image of the "banana plant," symbolizing the longing for home and the vision for family undertaking, while also comparing its characteristics of "not sprouting branches" and "having a clear origin" to reflect the protagonist's spiritual realm and youthful aspirations of "maintaining a transparent heart" and "making a mark between heaven and earth". This artistic imagery replaces dry reasoning, establishing a poetic temperament and prose tone for the entire play and making a new attempt in terms of a contemporary breakthrough in the national drama creation.

The genre of this play is a red epic of youthful growth, aiming to balance and integrate dramatic, narrative and lyrical elements. It draws on techniques from symphonic drama and serious drama, alternating between the styles of arias and recitative, to balance rational contemplation and emotional resonance, guiding the audience into the ideals and brightness pursued by Zhang Wentian. The chorus dynamically shapes the group portrait of youth in the awakening age and, more importantly, it externalizes Zhang Wentian's inner world and symbolizes the trends of the times. With Zhang Wentian as the protagonist, his growth is interwoven with the awakening of a generation of youth. The eight nameless chorus members are witnesses to the age and also participants in the revolution, singing out the battle hymn of youth and writing a magnificent chapter with actions.

In the narrative structure of "THE IDEAL OF LIFE IS TO LIVE AN IDEAL LIFE", the three farewells to his mother form the emotional thread of the character. Each farewell marks the beginning of a journey and is also a turning point in Zhang Wentian's life philosophy and emotional transformation.

The first farewell is a hymn to youth, symbolizing the initial burst of passion and ideals. It is the march of Zhang Wentian's life, filled with longing for the future and aspirations for ideals.

The second farewell is an elegy of homesickness, representing both the attachment to his hometown and the farewell to his youth. It is a turning point in Zhang Wentian's life, marking the moment he begins to shoulder the responsibilities of the times.

The third farewell resounds with triumph; it is Zhang Wentian's steadfast commitment to his ideals and a tribute to life. It is the highlight of Zhang Wentian's life, reflecting his noble spirit of willing to sacrifice for his ideals.

The minimalist stage, which evolves with the progression of the plot, represents the unpredictable changes of the times. The extensive use of symmetrical compositions imbues the narratives of youth and revolution with a sense of ceremony and sublimity. The actors' frequent frontal performances allow their voices to penetrate history and reach contemporary youth. The lighting passing through the stage illuminates the audience, enabling the modern youth to see themselves in the light. The music will also inspire the young audience and foster a sense of action. The play, through the portrayal of Zhang Wentian's youthful journey, leads the audience to revisit the years of passionate struggle, feel the noble spirit of the revolutionary forebears, and draw strength to forge ahead.

The drama "THE IDEAL OF LIFE IS TO LIVE AN IDEAL LIFE" is a significant achievement of the project fostered by the Department of Dramatic Literature as the "Benchmark College/Department for Party Building Work in Shanghai". From the initial topic selection and subsequent incubation to the final presentation, the process spanned several years with numerous revisions and brought together the collaboration of multiple colleges and departments and a large number of elite teachers and students in the creation. Extensive and solid preparatory work was conducted to tell the story well and sculpt the characters thoroughly. Using spare time for dedicated creation and meticulous refinement, the team overcame difficulties and worked, all in the hope to produce a high-quality performance that integrates historical, literary, artistic and educational values as a tribute to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
