Seminar on the Development of Chinese Art Studies in the New Era is held in Shanghai

From 22 to 24 April 2023, the "Seminar on the Development of Chinese Art Studies in the New Era" was successfully held in Shanghai, which was hosted by the Department of Science, Technology and Education of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism cum the Office of the National Art and Science Planning Leading Group and the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, and was organized by the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Lu Yingchuan, Vice Minister for Culture and Tourism, Tao Cheng, Director-General of the Department of Science, Technology and Education of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism cum Director of the Office of the National Art and Science Planning Leading Group, and Pan Min, Deputy Director-General of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Director of the Shanghai Municipal Civilization Office, attended the event and delivered speeches. Nearly 100 experts and scholars from the field of cultural and artistic studies and persons-in-charge from relevant organizations, gathered together to plan for the development of Chinese art studies in the new era.

The seminar released a ten-year research and development report on eight disciplines, including art theory, theatre, film and television, music, dance, fine arts, and art design. Seven project leaders from the national excellent art and science planning projects were invited to give presentations. At the seminar, Professor Huang Changyong, President of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, as the leader of the research project on the development of theatre studies over the past decade, introduced the main achievements, bottlenecks encountered and solutions, and future development directions of theatre studies, and shared some of the research team's thoughts on the construction of the "three major systems" of the theatre discipline.

At the seminar, expert representatives held group discussions on how to build and improve the disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of art studies with Chinese characteristics.


At the meeting, Xie Wei, Party Secretary of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, read out the initiative proposed by STA to accelerate the construction of 'three major systems' in art studies. In the initiative, we proposed specific ideas and directions to push forward the construction of the "three major systems" of art studies, and called on professionals of art studies across the county to contribute Chinese experience, Chinese theory, and Chinese paradigm to world art.

After discussion, all participants unanimously stated the determination to take this meeting as a new starting point and a new opportunity, keep innovating while maintaining what has worked in the post, research and explore with a down-to-earth approach, and jointly create a new situation in the work of artistic research, thus contributing wisdom and strength to promoting cultural confidence and self-development, casting new brilliance of Chinese culture, and building a culturally strong socialist country.
