On the afternoon of 7 April, students from the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs at the Department of Dramatic Literature gathered in Room 207 of the Red Building and listened attentively to Professor Fu Guangming's lecture entitled "Between the Stage and the Text - A Talk on the Appreciation of Shakespeare's Drama”.
Before the lecture began, Professor Chen Jun, Dean of the Department of Dramatic Literature, gave a brief introduction of Professor Fu Guangming. Professor Fu is a professor at the School of Foreign Languages at Capital Normal University and a research fellow at the Poetry Research Centre of Capital Normal University. He previously engaged in modern and contemporary literature research, especially in the Lao She research. Since 2012, he has been engaged in the translation and research of Shakespeare’s plays, and has published a number of influential works, which have greatly promoted the study on the Chinese translation of Shakespeare's plays.
As ordinary readers, how do we understand “Genuine Shakespeare' through Chinese language? In the lecture, Professor Fu covered this topic from the two aspects, i.e. the selection of translations and detailed reading of texts, which sparked enthusiastic reactions and discussions among students on site.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Chen Jun once again thanked Professor Fu for teaching the students about the translation and appreciation of Shakespeare's plays, especially about the detailed reading of texts, exploring the underlying lines and using the text to correct the performance. While introducing the changes in the text versions of Shakespeare's plays, Professor Fu also paid attention to the adaptation of Shakespeare's plays by modern art. Taking "Romeo and Juliet" as an example, he played movies, musicals, and sound plays to showcase the diverse presentation of the play and analyzed the highlights and shortcomings of the adaptation for the students, leading the students into the vast theatrical world of Shakespeare and opening a new window for them to understand Shakespeare and his works.
