On 4 December 2022, “The International Expert Seminar/Workshop on Innovation for New Media Performing Arts 20222" was held at the Changlin Road Campus of Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). The seminar/workshop was sponsored by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and co- organized by the College of Creative Studies, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Integrated Innovation for Digital Performing Arts and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Literary and Artistic Creation in Virtual Environment (aka the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Synthesized Space for Multimedia Virtual Performing Arts).
Xie Wei, Party Secretary of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, delivered an opening speech at the seminar. Yang Yang, Vice President of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, announced seminar/workshop open. Professor Liu Zhixin, Dean of the STA College of Creative Studies and Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Integrated Innovation for Digital Performing Arts, presided over the opening ceremony. Professor Cao Lin, President of the China Institute of Stage Design, and Zhang Yi, Director of the Information Technology Division of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, delivered speeches.
Lin Xun, Director of the Academic Committee of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Integrated Innovation for Digital Performing Arts and Professor at the Shanghai Jiaotong University, Alexander Brandt, Director of the Academic Committee of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Literary and Artistic Creation in Virtual Environment and founder of Xenario, and many experts and scholars from home and abroad participated in this seminar/workshop.
Since 2012, the "International Expert Seminar/Workshop on Innovation for New Media Performing Arts" has been held for 11 consecutive years with increasingly greater influence in the field of new media performing arts domestically and internationally, and has become an important platform for discussing and sharing new theories and practices of performing arts in China and the world.
The theme of this "International Expert Seminar/Workshop on Innovation for New Media Performing Arts" was "Digital Performing Arts Innovation in the Intelligent Era", and the topics included "AI + Digital Performing Arts in the Intelligent Era", "Digital Human and Digital Twin in the Intelligent Era", and "IP Digital Assets of Performing Arts in the Intelligent Era".
Actively driven by the concept of "Art + Science and Technology", the digital performing arts innovation in the intelligent era is changing with each passing day. The virtual-real symbiosis in the intelligent era makes the wider integration of art and science and technology possible. With the original aspiration of promoting the in-depth development of digital performing arts and building an innovative pattern in the intelligent era, the Shanghai Theatre Academy invited nearly 30 artists, technical experts and scholars from home and abroad, including Professor Zhang Jianwei, academician of the German Academy of Engineering, who have had in-depth research and practice on digital performing arts innovation, to carry out academic exchanges on the theme of the seminar/workshop and share practical experience on innovation, discuss how art and science and technology can drive each other to realize the cross-border innovation of digital performing arts, and analyze and judge the future development trend of digital performing arts.
The robot exhibition of the Institute of Machine Intelligence, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, i.e. the partner of the Robotic Performing Arts Project of Shanghai Theatre Academy, was held parallel to the seminar/workshop, and attracted the attention of a large number of visitors. Recently, the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Shanghai University for Science and Technology signed an agreement on a science-art integration project, and the two universities are actively promoting the cooperation on this project. The cooperation is being steadily carried out with the joint participation of the two key laboratories of STA.
The academic chair of this seminar/workshop was Associate Professor Yang Qingqing, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Integrated Innovation for Digital Performing Arts. At the same time, the seminar/workshop set up two round table forums, which were chaired by Professor Zhang Jingping, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Key Laboratory of Integrated Innovation for Digital Performing Arts, and Associate Professor Tie Zhong, Director of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Literary and Artistic Creation in Virtual Environment. Many scholars and industry experts had valuable and forward-looking sharing of cutting-edge insights.
