Graduates of Shanghai Theatre Academy win top award in Wuzhen Theatre Festival

"Modern Cave" wins the "Small Town Awards - Special Attention Award"

in the Emerging Theatre Artists’ Competition of the 9th Wuzhen Theatre Festival


Recently, “Modern Cave” collectively created by Liu Mengyang and Xu Ruisheng, graduates of BA Directing 2012 and MFA Directing 2017, and Liu Zhao, a graduate of MFA Directing 2017, from the Department of Directing of our university, and Zhao Huiyi, a graduate of BA Art Education 2014 and MFA Social Performance Studies 2018, as well as Liu Xuanyi, a theatre practitioner, was shortlisted for the Emerging Theatre Artists’ Competition of the 9th Wuzhen Theatre Festival and won the top award.

18 out of 541 works were shortlisted for this year’s Emerging Theatre Artists’ Competition. After three rounds of performance, “Modern Cave” entered the final along with other five works, and eventually won the "Small Town Awards - Special Attention Award".

The award-winning main creators were also the three leading actors of the play, all of whom graduated from the postgraduate programs of the Department of Directing, Shanghai Theatre Academy not long ago. As the owner of a national first-class undergraduate subject and a Shanghai Ranking A+ subject, the Department of Directing adheres to a teaching philosophy that emphasizes on training the students to never forget to observe, understand, think and express life in the process of artistic creation. The creative team has taken their own lives as the source materials, adhered to their own ideas, and made an artistic expression that features personality and is in line with the times by giving play to their imagination and creativity on the basis of true feelings.
