2nd working meeting of STA China Theatre Development Research Centre is held in Beijing

On the morning of 28 July, the 2nd working meeting of the STA China Theatre Academy Development Research Centre, a joint initiative of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), was held at NCPA’s west headquarters. The meeting was presided over by Mr Chen Ping, founding president of NCPA, and was attended by Mr Huang Changyong, President of STA, and the relevant people from all parties concerned. The meeting discussed and made arrangements for the centre’s positioning, operation and management models, development path, organizational structure and research plans.

At the meeting, the NCPA side introduced the basic situation of the China Theatre Development Centre, and the relevant experts put forward constructive opinions and suggestions on matters in relation to the centre’s think tank construction, research project application and cooperation with external resources, and gave full recognition to the reality and importance of the establishment of the center.

In February this year, Mr Chen Ping made a special report to Mr Luo Shugang, Minister for Culture and Tourism, who gave full recognition and expressed his support to this initiative of NCPA and STA to jointly establish the Theatre Development Research Centre. In the course of preparation, Mr Cai Qi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, after listening to the relevant report, expressed the full support for NCPA and STA to jointly set up the centre and instructed the relevant senior officials to provide support and service to the preparation and operation of the centre. In March this year, STA and NCPA signed the agreement for the joint establishment of the STA China Theatre Research Development Centre; In June, the two partners completed the formalities for approval; In late September or early October, the centre will be declared open at the first China Theatre Development Forum to be jointly hosted by the two partners and, at that time, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism will name the centre as the National Base for Cultural Reform and Development Research.

At the meeting, Mr Huang Changyong, President of STA, made a presentation on the centre’s positioning, operation model, development path and talent cultivation. Mr Chen Ping, founding president of NCPA, emphasized that in its development, the center should strengthen the top-level design, formulate the national theatre industry development plan, strengthen the design of industry standards and policies, deepen the reform of system and mechanism, explore the theatre operation and management models, and take the establishment of theatre management discipline and cultivation of theatre management professionals as the core work of the center.
