Recently, the list of 2022 National Social Science Fund of China Major Projects in Art Studies  was officially announced, and the project named "Theoretical Research on Chinese Drama Playwriting" submitted by Professor Lu Jun, member of the Shanghai Institute of Culture and History and chairman of the Academic Committee of Shanghai Theatre Academy, was on the list.

This is the second time that Professor Lu Jun won the funding support of this program after his project “Study on the Current Situation, Problems and Countermeasures in Chinese Opera Script Creation” was approved as a major project in art studies of the National Social Science Fund of China in 2016 and became the first-ever one of its kind for local universities in Shanghai. This is also another important academic achievement of Professor Lu Jun in recent years after he became the winner of such honors and projects as the First National Advanced Individual in Teaching Materials Construction, the National Education Achievement Award, the National First-class Undergraduate Course, the New Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Project of the Ministry of Education, and the Excellent Higher Education Ideological and Political Work Project of the Ministry of Education, as well as the High-Contributing Scholar of China and the "Drama China" Special Contribution Artist.

The National Social Science Fund of China Major Projects in Art Studies is the highest level, the most heavily funded and the most authoritative program category of the National Social Science Fund of China among all of its separately listed subjects in art studies at this stage. It was of greater difficulty, higher standards, stricter requirements and more heated competition to have been approved for the second time. Since the high-quality completion of the major project "Study on the Current Situation, Problems and Countermeasures in Chinese Opera Script Creation" and the exemption from completion inspection, Professor Lu Jun has continued to move forward along the idea of Chinese opera and modern drama constituting two pillars of playwriting studies. This is both in line with the previous research and has its own characteristics, and will continue to pursue the optimization and innovation of the foundation and framework of the discipline of playwriting studies through in-depth and detailed work, and accelerate the construction of the disciplinary system of screenwriting studies with Chinese characteristics in the new era from both perspectives of practical exploration and theoretical thinking.

As the chief expert of a major national project, Lu Jun said that this project will make a comprehensive summary, induction and identification of playwriting theories for Chinese drama, make a scientific explanation around the history, ontology, creation, comparison, development and other issues of playwriting studies, form a complete theoretical system of playwriting studies for drama, provide a demonstration for the research of playwriting studies for other theatrical types, and make a forward-looking forecast for the future development of playwriting, and that the approval of this project marks a new step forward in the research level and discipline construction of playwriting studies at the Shanghai Theater Academy.

It is reported that the National Social Science Fund of China Major Projects in Art Studies program adheres to the major practical issues as the main direction, pays equal attention to basic research and applied research, gives full play to the demonstration and guiding role of the National Social Science Fund of China, accelerates the construction of the system of art studies with Chinese characteristics, promotes academic research to serve the overall work of the party and the state, and serves the prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences. Behind the high standard, there is a high-level mechanism of evaluation and screening. Only 18 projects were selected into the National Social Science Fund of China Major Projects in Art Studies 2022.
