After many years of planning and construction, the Changlin Road Campus of Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) has been officially completed and put into use on 1 September 2019, realizing the ardent expectations of teachers, students and alumni. The completion of the new campus has laid a good material foundation and provided a strong support for the future development of STA. Since its establishment 74 years ago, STA has accumulated rich teaching experience and teaching achievements with the joint efforts of teachers, students and alumni. According to the decision of the STA administration after consideration, STA will use the new campus, new space and new carriers to gradually establish a series of libraries for alumni’s works kept at STA and their excellent representative works after graduation. The first one to establish is the STA Painting Library.
It is widely known that since the middle to late 1960s, as an art university with the richest tradition, STA has produced a large number of outstanding artists who have made great contributions and far-reaching influence on Shanghai’s and even China’s modern and contemporary history of fine arts. The fact that this outstanding group of artists has been emerging continuously in STA, which is not a specialized university of fine arts, is commended as a STA phenomenon by the industry.
The establishment of the “STA Painting Library” aims to maintain this precious tradition and carry it forward into the future. The collections of the “STA Painting Library” at the beginning are mainly the art archives of outstanding teachers and senior alumni. In the future, the function will be gradually expanded to include collection, research and exhibition of the original works of artists. The “STA Painting Library will continue to hold special exhibitions in the Huashan Road Campus and the Changlin Road Campus, so that the works of teachers and alumni can become art resources that students can get close to and access anytime and anywhere.
“The 1st Archive Exhibition of STA Artists’ Works” will display more than 80 representative art archives of a number of outstanding teachers and alumni, showing the glorious tradition of STA phenomenon. These precious historical materials across time are not only the glory of STA, but also of far-reaching documentation significance for the study of Shanghai’s history of fine arts.
This one-month exhibition will be opened at the Changlin Road Campus of STA on 1 December 2019. On the occasion of the 74th anniversary of STA, the “STA Painting Library” is looking forward to the enthusiastic attention and strong support from all sectors of the society.
