On the evening of 30 March, the graduation reporting performance of the College of Traditional Chinese Opera of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) presented Peking Opera “Continuation of Love on the Wall at the STA Experimental Theatre. The show was performed by graduating students of BA Traditional Chinese Opera Performance 2019 together with actors of the Shanghai Youth Peking Opera and Kun Opera Troupe.
Peking Opera Continuation of Love on the Wall is adapted from the play Pei Shaojun on the Wall written by Bai Pu, a master of Zaju (variety play) in the Yuan Dynasty. During the Shanghai International Art Festival in 2018, the masters’ edition of the newly adapted Peking Opera “Continuation of Love on the Wall”, starring Li Peihong, Dean of the STA College of Traditional Chinese Opera, and Zhang Jun, known as the “Prince of Kun Opera”, was staged in the Oriental Art Center and the Shanghai International Studies University, and received numerous good reviews.
Selecting the graduating students of the performance majors in Peking Opera and Music for Chinese Traditional Opera) to do a customized production of the youth edition of Continuation of Love on the Wall and implementing the individualized training program for students in a specific project through the Shanghai Youth Peking Opera and Kun Opera Troupe as the platform of culture-education integration to guide, strengthen and formulate individualized training and development plans and explore the talent training mode of art education in traditional Chinese opera is an concrete and effective practice of the guiding principle of producing talents” and “producing works”.
The training of traditional Chinese opera talents is to be taken as a whole including talents in performance, music and related majors. In the graduation season, with the cooperation of teachers and graduating students of the various majors, several major productions, such as the Peking Opera and Kun Opera mixed edition of “Legend of the White Snake”, the newly adapted Peking Opera Continuation of Love on the Wall, the graduation showcase performance and the Chinese traditional opera concert Harmonious Spring View, will be completed, which makes a concentrated demonstration of the teaching achievements in undergraduate education.
Ma Bomin, Director of the Shanghai Peking Opera and Kun Opera Art Development Advisory Committee, and many industry experts gave warm encouragement to the students. Zhou Yin’e, Deputy Party Secretary of STA, attended the performance, together with the members of the leadership of the STA College Traditional Chinese Opera.
On 11 April, the STA College of Traditional Chinese Opera will present the last two performances of the graduation season, which are the graduation showcase performance of the two majors of traditional Chinese opera performance and music for traditional Chinese opera and the traditional Chinese opera concert Harmonious Spring View .
