The 2018 International Master Class on Directing (Ancient Civilizations) kicks off successfully

On the morning of 14 May, the opening ceremony of the 2018 International Master Class on Directing (Ancient Civilizations) was held at the front square of the Foxi Building of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr Yang Yang, Vice president of STA. Mr Lou Wei, Chairman of STA, Mr Li Guoyi, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation, Professor Lu Ang, Dean of STA’s Directing Department, Ms Xu Yong, Director of STA’s CPC Committee and President Office, Ms Zhang Yunlei, Deputy Director of the International Exchange Centre, and the cultural program coordinator of the Israeli Consulate-General in Shanghai attended the opening ceremony.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, Professor Lu Ang briefly introduced the original aspiration and process of planning and preparing for this the master class featuring ancient civilizations. Then, Mr Hanan Snir, chief director of the Israeli National Theater, gave a speech as the representative of the instructors of the master class.

Subsequently, Ms Li Xuan, President of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Art Theatre, and Mr Chen Mingkuang, Head of the Jiangsu Provincial Huai Opera Troupe, also spoke as the representatives of the trainees of the master class. On behalf of all the students, they expressed their expectations for the master class course and their determination to study hard.

In her remarks, the cultural program coordinator of the Israeli Consulate-General in Shanghai expressed the feeling of honor and gratitude to STA for inviting the famous Israeli director to instruct the master class.

Since its inception many years ago, the international master class on directing has been strongly supported by the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation. This time, Mr Li Guoyi, Secretary-General, came to the opening ceremony once again to give a speech in which he highly recognized the significance and value of the international master class on directing and praised the strength of the instructors and the quality of the class. At the opening ceremony, Professor Lu Ang thanked the Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation and presented the publications of the International Master Class on Directing (Oceania and North Europe) to the Secretary-General as an outcome report.

Mr Lou Wei, Chairman of STA, summed up the major achievements of each master class held by STA in the recent years. He expressed the STA leaders’ support and concern for the master class as they always do, as well as the earnest hope for the master class this time.

The International Master Class on Directing (Ancient Civilizations) this time features five top international directing masters from five countries with the heritage of splendid ancient civilization, namely, Israel, Turkey, India, Egypt and Iran, who will instruct the master class in person. They are: Hanan Snir from Israel, Işıl Kasapoğlu from Turkey, Kamaluddin Nilu from India, Assem Nagaty from Egypt, and Mohammad Aghebati from Iran.

In addition, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the inception of the international master class on directing, so an international forum on theatre directing art and talent training will be held after the conclusion of the workshops given by the five masters. This is not only a review and summary of the work of the master class in the past 10 years, but also a new starting point for the work of the master class going forward.

The 2018 International Master Class on Directing (Ancient Civilizations) formally began on the afternoon of 14 May. In the next five weeks, the acting and directing artists from all over China will follow the five top international directing masters from five countries with ancient civilization to study, exchange and discuss the skills and techniques of theatre directing and acting.
