Peking Opera "Kylin Brocade Bag" is a classic play of Mr Cheng Yanqiu, a master of Peking Opera. The play has been constantly performed since the premiere at the Shanghai Golden Theater in May 1940 and can be seen as an evergreen tree on the stage of Peking opera. On 19 May 2018, as one of the key performances of "Shanghai Theater Academy Art Season", the College of Chinese Traditional Opera of the Shanghai Theater Academy will present a remarkable “Kylin Brocade Bag” performance for the audience.
This performance will be starred by the famous Peking Opera artist Ms Li Peihong. This will be her first performance in front of the audience in Shanghai since she became Dean of the College of Chinese Traditional Opera of the Shanghai Theater Academy. As one of the inheritors of Peking Opera art, “Kylin Brocade Bag” is a masterpiece that reflects her inheritance of the exquisite performance art of Peking Opera masters of the older generation. Different from the past, the "Kylin Brocade Bag" performance this time will be jointly performed by the teachers and students of the College of Chinese Traditional Opera of the Shanghai Theatre Academy on the sage. Teachers and students performing on the same stage symbolizes the inheritance from generation to generation. The Youth Peking Opera Orchestra is also specially invited to participate in the event in Shanghai.
As the National Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera Art Education Center, the College of Chinese Traditional Opera of the Shanghai Theater Academy always gives top priority to talent cultivation and art inheritance. The joint performance of “Kylin Brocade Bag” by the teachers and students on this occasion is also a new start of the endeavors in this regard.
