From 8 to 11 November 2017, as part of a series of academic activities of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Chinese theatre, the 4th International Seminar on Trendy Drama at End of Qing Dynasty and Beginning of Republic of China & Launch Ceremony of 100 Copies of “Compile Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China” was held at the Shanghai Hotel. This seminar was jointly sponsored by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Shanghai Library, National Library of China Publishing House and Chinese Society of Drama Theory and History and jointly organized by the Shanghai Theatre Academy Library and Editorial Office of “Theatre Art” Magazine. More than 100 experts and scholars from home and abroad participated in this seminar.

On 9 November 2017, the Launch Ceremony of 100 Copies of “Compiled Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China” was held in the Shanghai Room of the Shanghai Hotel. The launch ceremony was presided over by Mr Zhang Weiling, Vice President of Shanghai Theatre Academy. Leaders, professors and representatives of the Shanghai Library, National Library of China Publishing House, Chinese Society of Drama Theory and History, Editorial Board of “Compiled Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China”, Nanjing University, Sichuan Theatre Association, South China Normal University, Taibei National University of the Arts, Setsunan University of Japan, University of Macau and Shanghai Theatre Academy attended the launch ceremony.

Mr Zhou Deming, Deputy Curator of Shanghai Library, Ms Yin Mengxia, Editor-in-Chief of National Library of China Publishing House, Mr Tian Benxiang, Editor-in-Chief of “Compiled Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China”, Prof Hu Zhiyi, President of Chinese Society of Drama Theory and History and professor of Zhejiang University, and Prof Gong Baorong, Vice President of Shanghai Theatre Academy, delivered speeches at the launch ceremony. Ms Deng Yongqiu, editor of National Library of China Publishing House, introduced editorial and publishing process of the “Compiled Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China”. The publication of this book can be regarded as a lavish gift that the Shanghai Theatre Academy has presented in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Chinese theatre.

After that, the seminar moved on to the keynote presentations which were conducted successfully. Prof Tian Benxiang, Prof Dong Jian, Prof Seto, Prof Yuan Guoxin, Prof Zhu Shoutong, Prof Zhong Mingde and other senior professors from the academic circle made excellent presentations. During the two-day seminar, experts and scholars carried out heated discussions at two meeting venues and had full exchanges on the subject of early drama studies, crude stage play studies, trendy drama at the end of Qing Dynasty and beginning of Republic of China, narrative aesthetics of Chinese theatre and so on. The participating experts spoke highly about the preparatory work of the seminar and were in the opinion that the publication of the “Compiled Collection of Theatre Journal Literature during Republic of China” is not only grand event of the publishing circle, but also an important achievement in the field of theatre studies.
