On 1 November 2017, the plaque unveiling ceremony for the Marvin Carlson Theatre Centre was held in front of the Foxi Building of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). This centre is jointly established by STA and the Theatre Department of the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York (CUNY) and is named after Professor Marvin Carlson, the outstanding American theatre theorist.
STA President Huang Changyong presented the certificate of appointment for honorary professor to Professor Marvin Carlson. Other participants of the event included: Gong Baorong, Vice President, Li Zhenlin, Dean of Graduate School, Ye Changhai, Director of Academic Committee, and William Sun, Director of Schechner Performance Studies Centre, as well as two professors from the Theatre Department of the Graduate Centre of CUNY, one professor from Japan and one professor from Germany. The ceremony was presided over by Wu Aili, Director of Research Division and Director of Development and Planning Office.
Both sides exchanged the remarks of congratulation. Professor Marvin Carlson expressed his sincere gratitude to all relevant professors of STA for their efforts in the past three to four years in pushing forward this cooperation, reviewed the exchange of visits and academic exchange that had been carried out between the two university in the past few years, and was full of expectation towards the deeper exchange to be carried out in the future around this centre. President Huang Changyong first thanked Professor Marvin Carlson for bringing more opportunities for international exchange to STA and advocated that the two sides should continue to carry out the friendly cooperation and exchange on the basis of full communication, mutual trust and mutual respect. Then, Professor Li Zhenlin of STA and other professors from CUNY, Japan and Germany also made their remarks, fully recognizing the important role that STA and Professor Marvin Carlson play in their respective areas of cultural studies. They all believed that the establishment of the Marvin Carlson Theatre Centre at STA will greatly promote the in-depth exchange between China and America and even that between the East and the West, and expressed their sincere congratulation to the plaque unveiling of the centre.
In a warm and friendly atmosphere, President Huang Changyong and Professor Ye Changhai of STA together with Professor Marvin Carlson and two other professors of CUNY unveiled the plaque of the Marvin Carlson Theatre Centre of STA. At last, all participants of the plaque unveiling ceremony took a group photo in front of the Foxi Building, joined by the young academics who had previously participated in the exchange between the two universities.
