In the afternoon of 10 September, the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) held the opening ceremony of the 2015-2016 academic year at the STA Theatre. Leaders of STA and its relevant colleges and departments attended the opening ceremony together with all Year 2015 new students, head teachers and student councilors.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victories of the Chinese people’s anti-Japanese war and the world anti-Fascism war, as well as the 70th anniversary of the establishment of STA. Before the opening ceremony formally started, a brief and solemn ceremony was held during which the STA leaders presented the commemorating medallions to 11 eligible veterans of STA who were 90 years of age on average.

The opening ceremony began in the solemn, excited and indignant national anthem of PRC. This year, STA welcomes 462 new undergraduate students and 83 new graduate students from across China, and it also welcomes a batch of new teachers and staff members to various teaching and administration positions to commence their career life.

The representatives of the new students, alumni and teachers delivered speeches in succession. After that, Prof Han Shen, President of STA, made a formal address in which he highlighted three key requirements to the students: First of all, ensure the in-depth understanding of the mission and responsibilities of STA and students themselves to cultivate the elites of art majors and take the leading position in artistic creation and innovation; Secondly, fully cherish and utilize STA’s ecological environment of artistic disciplines and find the space for development that is suitable to the individual person; Last but not the least, make the students the master of study as only when the students become the master of study can they become the master of the society in the future and find themselves a place to set foot and develop in the artistic professions.

At last, there was the STA flag handover ceremony. In the inspiring STA school song, Mr Lou Wei, Party Secretary of STA, delivered the STA flag from the hands of the representative of the old students to the hands of the representative of the new students. All new students of Year 2015 stood for the flag handover ceremony. The opening ceremony was concluded in the solemn and soothing atmosphere with all attendees standing up and singing the STA school song.
