On 23 June, the opening ceremony of the 5th Shanghai Summer School Chinese Traditional Opera Program of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) was held at STA’s Huashan Road campus. More than 20 foreign students from the USA, UK, New Zealand, Brazil, Egypt, India, Singapore and Switzerland gathered at STA and will soon experience an unforgettable summer vacation.

This year’s program offers three courses, namely, Chinese traditional opera, Chinese culture and Chinese language. At the end of the program, the students as a group will present a reporting performance. During this year’s program, the students will be guided to discover from the Chinese performing arts the elements that can be inherited and integrate them with the modern theatre, thereby creating the new art forms.

In order to promote the Chinese traditional culture, cultivate the attention of the young students of foreign countries to the Chinese culture and attract international students of high caliber to come to Chinese for long-term study of Chinese traditional arts, STA has held the Shanghai Summer School Chinese Traditional Opera Program on a continuous basis, in order to enhance the development of the international student programs of our academy and upgrade the quality of international students in an all-rounded way.

To date, STA has held this program for four years and accumulated successful experience in recruitment and management. The curriculum of the program has been highly praised by the previous students who have also shared their valuable opinions about the program. All these have laid a sound foundation for the continuous execution of this program this year. The students this year are mainly from the first tier art institutions in European, American and Asia regions, such as New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Brown University School of Drama, Leeds University Department of Chinese Studies, Seoul University of the Arts and Lasalle College of the Arts. Some of these institutions have formalized the credit exchange and recognition with STA.
