In the morning of 4 January, the Shanghai Theatre Academy welcomed the arrival of the teachers and students from home and abroad coming for the 4th Winter Institute. The professors of Brown University, Duke University, Yale University and New York University of the USA, as well as over 20 international students from Harvard University of the USA and Macquarie University of Australia and over 70 Chinese teachers and students will soon begin to share 10 days of intensive and fulfilling artistic and academic journey. Leaders of the Shanghai Theatre Academy Mr Lou Wei and Mr Han Sheng attended and spoke at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof William Sun of the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
With the rapid development of economy and social undertakings in China, the development trends of culture and arts in China is attracting more and more attention of the international community. Since January 2011, the Shanghai Theatre Academy has partnered with a number of top American universities in hosting the Winter Institute every year, which has provided the opportunity for the university teachers and students from home and abroad to explore a variety of new topics in the entertainment industry and performance studies in a focused way.
The contents of teaching of the Winter Institute will also focus on the current interpretation of the world famous works. At the same time of interpreting the world famous works, the significance of cultural exchange is also extended into all aspects of performance studies. Culture needs not only creativity, but also exchange. The Winter Institute provides a platform which not only broadens the vision of the teachers and students of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, but also expands the channel for foreigners to tell China stories and tell the stories well. In the meantime, it is expected that the Winter Institute would be a catalyst for producing more and more “sales person” who love the Chinese culture.
