On 14 November 2014, Mr Han Sheng, President of Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) received Mr Michael Fricke, Chancellor of Folkwang University of the Arts, Germany. Mr Han and Mr Fricke signed the MOU for academic cooperation between the two universities.

Folkwang University of the Arts was founded in 1927. It is now the central place for artistic training in music, theatre, dance, design and academic studies. For more than 80 years the name Folkwang has stood for outstanding artistic teaching, learning and production – and it has long since become a cultural brand name, far beyond national borders. For a number of times over the past few years, Folkwang University of the Arts has invited the teachers and students of STA to participate in the Shakespeare Theatre Festival that it has hosted.

During this meeting, Mr Fricke expressed explicitly the hope for in-depth cooperation with STA in the areas of dance and electronic music and to promote the teacher and student exchange between the two universities, and offered to assist with STA’s participation in the performances at the Ruhr Art Festival. Mr Han undertook to give full support to all these projects.

The MOU mainly covers the exchange between the two universities in four areas: (1) exchange of academic materials, publications and information; (2) exchange between professors and research personnel; (3) exchange and two-way visits between students; (4) collaborative research and irregular academic seminars.

Both Mr Han and Mr Fricke, as the head of their respective university, believed that the MOU will be mutually beneficial for a long-term cooperation and agreed to identify further opportunities for deeper and broader cooperation with the objective of promoting the development of both universities in education and research.
