In the spring of 2012, “The Slow Boat to Shanghai”, a single showing drama, was staged at the Black Box Theatre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) and was highly praised both within and outside of STA.

On 31 October 2014, “The Slow Boat to Shanghai – Wuzhen Version” was staged as one of the performances of the 2nd Wuzhen Theatre Festival Carnival, with the support of the Shanghai Postgraduate Student Educational Innovation Program. Changing from a small theatre performance to an environmental theatre performance, it was a fresh attempt as well as a new challenge for the team.

This performance at Wuzhen was with the consent of the director and playwright of the first version of the play and with the great support of the Department of Postgraduate Programs of STA. The key members of the team were all postgraduate students. The three main characters of the play were performed by two students of arts education and one alumni of the Department of Directing.

“The Slow Boat to Shanghai” was the first performance of STA to participate in the Wuzhen Theatre Festival under the support of the Shanghai Postgraduate Student Educational Innovation Program. The team walked out of the Black Box Theatre and STA campus and entered the theatre festival and society. Being one of the many teams (over one hundred in total) at the theatre festival from all over the world, they withstood the test and own the recognition of the audience throughout the process production, rehearsal and performance and, finally, returned with a complete success.
