On 3 November 2014, at the invitation of the Theatre and Chinese Traditional Opera Research Centre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, Prof Marvin Carlson of the City University, USA, visited STA and gave a lecture. The lecture was chaired by Prof Gong Baorong, Vice President of STA. Prof Ye Zhanghai, Chairman of STA’s Academic Committee, also attended the lecture. Prof Hu Kaiqi acted as the interpreter during the lecture.

Prof Marvin Carlson carries a big weight and plays a leading role in the contemporary American theatrical circles with high accomplishments, particularly, in theoretical studies.

The topic of Prof Marvin Carlson’s lecturer this time was “Theatre and Theatrical Literature: A Study of Cross-cultural Relationship between Theatrical Text and Performance”. In the lecture, Prof Carlson introduced the latest developments in the studies on this issue in the European and American theoretical circles.

Prof Carlson’s lecture revealed a new tendency in the contemporary theatre, that is, the issues existed between the text and playwright, director and performers. This lecture provided a good way of thinking to the Chinese theatrical circles and, particularly, a reference for studies in the relationship between stage and text in today’s Chinese theatrical creation.

The lecture was held at the Wisteria Pavilion of STA. The participants included doctoral students and master degree students of different specialties as well as teachers of STA. The lecture was followed by a discussion session with the active involvement of the students. Prof Carlson will give another lecture on the topic of “The Unknown Drama of Arab Countries” on 5 November.
