Prof Lu Jing, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, gives a lecture at STA's advanced study program

On 16 October 2014, the advanced study program of the Teacher and Teaching Development Centre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) began formally. This advanced study program, which has been designed to strengthen the life-long learning of the teachers of STA so as to upgrade the teaching standard, consists of 20 sessions, of which there are 14 sessions in the arts category and 6 sessions in the education category, with all the speakers being the first-class academicians and artists. At the invitation of the program, Prof Lu Jing, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, was the speaker for the first session, at which he gave a lecture entitled Specialized Characteristics is the Foundation Stone of Building First-Class Undergraduate Education.

STA Chairman Lou Wei and STA President Han Sheng attended the first session of the advance study program, together the teachers from the various colleges and departments as well as part of the STA middle management team, totaling over 100 people. The session was chaired by STA Vice President Huang Changyong.

Prof Lu Jing took the undergraduate programs of journalism and clinic medicine of Fudan University and undergraduate programs of music and broadcasting and professional hosting of East China Normal University as an example and elaborated on the internal logical relationships between the specialized characteristics and discipline system, curriculum system, talent cultivation objectives and talent cultivation scheme. In his lecturer which was delivered in an interesting and humorous way, Prof Lu explained the profound theories in simple language with the support of abundant and vivid illustrations and addressed effectively the questions of what specialized characteristics and specialty construction are all about.

At the end of the session, Prof Lu interacted closely with the teachers of STA and answered their questions. After the lecturer, many teachers commented that it had been a rewarding experience and triggered their own in-depth thinking about the goals of specialty development and construction in the future. They looked forwarded to subsequent activities of the advanced study program of the Teacher and Teaching Development Centre.
