STA puppet major students win awards at Gold Lion National Puppet Competition

Co-organized by the International Puppet Federation China Centre, China Puppet and Shadow Art Society and Ha’erbin Municipal Culture, Press and Publication Bureau, the 5th Gold Lion National Middle-aged and Young Puppet and Shadow Artists Competition was concluded in Ha’erbin on 26 September. 43 performances from 17 professional puppet and shadow companies across China participated in the competition.

As China’s only tertiary institution that cultivates puppet and shadow art talents, the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) has participated in this completion for five times in a roll with impressive results. STA’s four performances this year included both traditional and creative performances. After three days of intense competition, the STA students won two gold prizes in the new talent division. Their teacher, Mr Qin Feng won the Best Instructor Award.

The Gold Lion National Middle-aged and Young Puppet and Shadow Artists Competition is held once every two years. As an initiative launched by the China Puppet and Shadow Art Society and other like-minded organization for the purpose of promote the inheritance of the puppet and shadow art, it is the highest level competition in China’s puppet and shadow profession.
