Recently, the 2014 Summer School hosted by the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) was concluded with great success. It was the 4th consecutive year that STA has hosted the summer school for foreign students interested in Chinese culture. This year’s summer school featured a traditional Chinese opera program which included three courses, i.e. Chinese opera, Chinese culture and Chinese language. More than 20 foreign students from the US, UK and other countries were enrolled in the program. The courses of the program were designed for the students to learn Chinese opera steps and movements, water sleeve routines, spear and sword routines, and selected scene work, as well as increase their knowledge about Chinese culture and improve their Chinese language skills. The students also had the opportunities to watch traditional Chinese opera shows and make field trips. At the end of the summer school, the foreign students presented an on-stage reporting performance of traditional Chinese opera at STA’s White Palace Theatre on its Lianhua Road campus.
