The 21st Romania Sibiu International Theatre Festival was held from 6 to 15 June. The teachers and students of the directing department and acting department of the College of Chinese Traditional Operas of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) participated in the festival with their performance of the experimental Peking opera “Back to Life” which was well received and highly appraised by the audiences.

This year’s festival was attended by theatrical companies from over 70 countries around the world with over 2500 artists. During the festival, there were over 350 performances in total at over 66 venues in Sibiu including all major theatres, public squares and parks, attracting over 62,000 audiences from home and abroad daily. Established in 1994, the Sibiu International Theatre Festival is now the most influential theatre festival in Romania. With 20 years’ development, it has become one of the top three theatre festivals in Europe, together with the Avignon Theatre Festival of France and Edinburgh Theatre Festival of UK.

During their participation in the festival, the STA teachers also attended the forum on doctoral studies in theatre management and took the students to observe a large number of performances from all over the world including Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard performed as an inspiring Italian modern play.

The Sibiu International Theatre Festival provided STA with a platform to demonstrate the Chinese stage art to the world and, equally important, it provided the teachers and students of STA a window to appreciate the theatrical art of the world.
