The 4th South Africa International Ballet Competition (SAIBC 2014) was held in Cape Town, South Africa from 18 to 22 February 2014. As the largest international ballet competition and the only one of its kind in the whole African continent, SAIBC has been held every two years since it was founded in 2008. The jury is comprised of experts from different countries, and the contestants are aged from 12 to 26 years old, who are divided into three levels, i.e. adult, youth and children.

The Dance School Attached to Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA Dance School) selected and sent four ballet students as the contestants to SAIBC 2014, namely, Yu Hang, Fu Yiyang and Bai Dingkai from Grade 5 and Xu Jingkun from Grade 4. After the painstaking training in Shanghai and intense rehearsals upon arrival in Cape Town, with the direction, guidance and support of the school leaders and artistic instructors, the contestants overcame a variety of difficulties and succeeded with outstanding results in the competition.

At SAIBC 2014, a total of 65 contestants from 14 countries including China, South Africa, USA, Swiss, Cuba and South Korea qualified into the semi-finals and finals of the different levels/groups, and the competition among the contestants was highly intense. In the end, from STA Dance School, Yu Hang (14-year-old) won two gold prizes for female children classical dance and modern dance respectively, Xu Jingkun (13-year-old) won the gold prize for male children classical dance, and Fu Yiyang (13-year-old) won the bronze prize for female children classical dance. In the meantime, Zhang Yuanyuan from STA Dance College received two gold prizes for female youth classical dance and modern dance respectively.

Several teams from China competed in SAIBC 2014, including three from Shanghai. Together, they won five gold prizes and one bronze prize, thereby ranking China the No.1 among all participating countries in terms of the total number of prizes received. SAIBC 2014 was another good testimonial of STA’s excellence in ballet education, and provided the STA students the opportunity to shine, once again, in the international arena.
