  Sherwood Hu has a master's degree in theatre and film production from the State University of New York and a Ph.D. in directing from the University of Hawaii. During his working in Shanghai People's Art Theatre, Hu successfully directed the modern dramas W. M and Chinese Dream (it has won the Performance Prize in the first China Art Festival)。 While studying in the United States, he was granted the Honorable Mention from the Kennedy Arts Center for his directing in The Legend of Prince Lanling. In 1994, he returned to China and filmed Warrior Lanling, which brought him many awards from various international film festivals. Having been appreciated by Francis Ford Coppola, Hu was later invited to direct his first English film Lani-Loa and became the first Hollywood Chinese director coming from the mainland of China.
