Sun Huizhu (William), playwright, director, professor, formerly vice president of STA, consortium editor of TDR, The Drama Review, the Journal of Performance Studies (contributing editor, 1988-2010), advisory board member of Studies in Theatre and Performance (publication of UK’s Standing Conference of University Drama Dept’s, since 1999), director of Asia Pacific Bureau of UNESCO Chair ITI for Theatre Schools. MA in Literature, STA, 1981; MA in Humanities, SUNY, Buffalo, 1985; PhD in PS, NYU, 1990. Taught world theatre history, dramatic literature/theory, playwriting, acting, performance studies, at Macalester College (Minnesota), Tufts University (Boston), California State University, Northridge, York University (Toronto). Returned to Shanghai in 1999. Major research interests: social performance studies, intercultural theatre, theatre narratology. Research grants include NEH (US) grant and China’s national arts research project. Plays such as China Dream, The Old B Hanging on the Wall, Tomorrow He’ll be Out of the Mountains, Gods and the Good Woman, Queue, Shalom Shanghai; Yue operas Hedda Gabler and The Lady from the Sea; Beijing operas King Oedipus and Miss Julie have been seen in China, U.S., Japan, Singapore, Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Romania, India, Iran, UK, and Ireland. Directing credits include Shalom Shanghai, Caucasian Chalk Circle, Medea, Line, The Visit, and Beijing opera style Caucasian Chalk Circle, Othello.
