On the morning of 4 January 2018, the opening ceremony of the 7th Winter Institute was successfully at the New Space Theatre on the Huashan Road campus of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Gong Baorong, Vice President of STA. Professor Huang Changyong, President of STA, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Hosted by STA, the Winter Institute of this year is co-sponsored by Brown University, Columbia University, New York University and Yale University of the United States.

President Huang Changyong first extended a warm welcome to the American professors and students who had come from afar for this year’s Winter Institute. Professor Matthew Guttmann of the Brown University gave a speech on behalf of all American professors and Ms Maya Riley, a student of the New York University, gave a speech on behalf of all American students. Everyone was happy to see the continuous running of the Winter Institute for seven consecutive years. The continuous development of a project like this can not be achieved without the concerted efforts of the host and all partner institutions. Subsequently, the 10-day Winter Institute began formally, which includes lectures, workshops, student activities, performance observation etc.

Since 2012 to date, through lectures, seminars, workshops and exchange performances etc, the Winter Institute has provided a rare opportunity for the students to obtain knowledge, broaden their horizons and communicate with professors and students from the top Ivy League universities of the United State, thereby building a bridge of mutual understanding and mutual trust for further cooperation. Taking this opportunity, Chinese and American scholars, artists and students gather in Shanghai to exchange academic knowledge, share valuable experience, explore performance forms and ignite sparkles of ideas, and contribute to the development of performing arts.
