The 11th International Symposium on Asian Theatre was held at the Huashan Road Campus of the Shanghai Theatre Academy in China on 4-5 November.
Jointly held by Shanghai Theatre Academy in China, Osaka University in Japan, National University of the Arts in South Korea, and Taipei National University of the Arts in China, the International Symposium on Asian Theatre aims to promote theatre education and academic research in Asian colleges and universities, strengthen academic exchanges, and promote friendship among inter-university teachers and students. Since 2013, the symposium has been successfully held for 10 times, and this year is the 11th. Due to the impact of COVID-19, three consecutive meetings have been held online since 2020. This was the first in-person meeting after the pandemic, and it was of unusual significance as it coincided with the China International Import Expo and the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. The theme of this year's symposium was "Returning to the Theatre: Retrospect and Prospect', participants of the symposium engaged in a lively discussion around this theme.
This year's conference was hosted by the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), organized by the STA College of Chinese Opera with the support of the Shanghai Chinese Opera Culture Collaborative Innovation Centre, and moderated by Professor Zhang Weipin from the STA College of Chinese Opera. The conference was attended by a number of professors and graduate students from Japan, Korea, Taipei of China and our university.
Professor Liu Qing, Vice President of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
Mr Qi Jisong, Deputy Secretary of the General Party Branch of the STA College of Chinese Opera and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Chinese Opera Culture Collaborative Innovation Centre, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer.
During the conference, the participants reviewed the theatre culture before the COVID-19 pandemic and looked forward to the prospects of theatre in the post-pandemic era. The conference focused on the development of world theatre and cross-cultural theatre exchanges, in view of actively promoting the interaction and spread of theatre.
