The 11th Shanghai International Experimental Theatre Festival & Symposium, co-hosted by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the Yunnan Arts University and the International Theatre Institute and supported by the Shanghai Jing'an District Bureau of Culture and Tourism, will be held from 17 to 23 October 2022.

The theme of this festival & symposium is "Experimental Theatre in the Pandemic - Tribute to Moliere". The festival will demonstrate the new trend of experimental theatre to the audience in an online and offline combined mode, activate the atmosphere of academic discussion, and enable theatre professionals and art lovers in Shanghai and even the whole country to better understand the trends of theatrical thought and creation both at home and abroad.

The Shanghai International Experimental Theater Festival, which started in 1998, is a brand event of international cultural exchange founded by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, aiming to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between Chinese and foreign theatre circles. It takes the small theater plays with a strong experimental nature as the carrier, and emphasizes the identity of dramatic arts. It mainly caters for such groups as theatre professionals and young students, and uses rich and diversified forms of performance to expand people's international vision, enliven academic exchanges, improve aesthetic taste and inject fresh blood into the cultural prosperity of modern metropolises.

The Shanghai International Experimental Theater has been successfully held for ten times so far. Each time, there were about 10 invited overseas plays, 3-4 invited domestic plays, 40-50 performances and more than 10,000 audiences, and there was an open academic symposium at the same time.

This year's Shanghai International Experimental Theater Festival brings together 16 newly created plays from China, Greece, Germany, Italy, Republic of North Macedonia, Iran, India, Uruguay, Algeria, Georgia, Armenia and South Korea, including two plays from the Shanghai Theatre Academy, namely, "Nibbling" and "Critique of the School for Wives". The offline performances and academic symposium are co-hosted by the Yunnan Arts University and the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
