On the afternoon of 13 January, the 10-day-long 2020 Winter Institute officially closed in the New Space Theatre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). Xie Wei, Party Secretary of STA, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech.

So far, the Winter Institute has been held for nine consecutive times. The co-sponsors this year were Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, University of Southern California and Yale University. In his speech, Party Secretary Xie Wei expressed his gratitude to the professors from all the co-sponsoring universities, as well as to the participating professors from Fudan University, Nanjing University, Yunnan Arts University and Shanghai Theatre Academy. Party Secretary Xie Wei said that STA is willing to make efforts for the development of the Winter Institute, which should be continued so long as students can benefit from it. At the same time, Party Secretary Xie Wei also asked that all students should continue to carry forward what they have learned in ten days and truly integrate it into their daily study and career.

After the closing ceremony, the students gave a presentation reporting on their ten days of study, which included the classical long arias of Peking Opera, short sketches and bilingual Chinese and English drama fragments etc. After the performance, the participants bid farewell to each other during the buffet dinner.

Since the first Winter Institute was held in 2012, more than 60 professors from top universities in the United States have come to teach in the program, including some who have participated for many times. This is enough to show that the Winter Institute has formed a certain brand effect. One of the original intentions of establishing the Winter Institute is to provide a world-class alternative of different style for China's conventional higher education. Specifically speaking, it is to try, in the high-end classroom that is keen on theories, a teaching mode that not only explores the novelty and leading edge, but also is practical and keeps away from empty talk. It is believed that the Winter Institute will become better and better centering on and around this original intention. We look forward to the gathering of new and old members of the Winter Institute at STA in January next year.
