Shanghai’s annual examination for art majors is about to officially begin. Today, the newly commissioned Changlin Road Campus of Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) will welcome more than 2,400 candidates applying for the Department of Stage Design and the College of Creative Studies. This also marks the official opening of STA's 2020 enrollment examination. On 8 January, STA released the measures of undergraduate enrolment examination for art majors in 2020. In the past week, STA received a total of 47,220 applications from all over the country, which is a record high. However, STA’s planned enrollment is only 539 students, which makes an application/enrolment ratio close to 100:1. Among all majors, broadcasting and hosting may become the most difficult one to get in, with 6,746 applicants competing for 20 places at an enrolment rate of 337:1.

This registration period for this year’s enrolment examination for art majors was from 28 December 2019 to 3 January 2020 (i.e. one week). By 3 January, STA has received a total of 47,220 applications for the 2020 enrolment examination, while the total number of applications was 45884 for the 2019 enrolment examination. The venues for 2020 enrolment examination will also include the new Changlin Road Campus. Therefore, all four campuses of STA will have examination venues. Among them, before the Spring Festival (15 to 28 February), the enrolment examination venues for the Department of Stage Design and the College of Creative Studies are located in the Changlin Road Campus, and the enrolment examination venues for the College of Chinese Opera are located in the Lianhua Road Campus. After the Spring Festival (15 to 28 February), the Department of Acting, the College of Film and Television, the Department of Directing, the Department of Theatrical Literature and the College of Dance will start their examinations in turn. Among them, the examination venues for the Department of Theatrical Literature are located in the Changlin Road Campus and the Lianhua Road Campus and the examination venues for the College of Dance are located in the Hongqiao Road Campus, while the examinations for other majors are all at the Huashan Road Campus.

It is worth noting that this year STA has increased the academic requirements for some majors. In addition, the content and duration of the examination of painting major have changed a lot compared with the previous years, so as to fully examine the candidates' painting skills. In this year's enrollment examination, for most majors, the examination items of the preliminary are optimized, and the examination contents of the callback and final rounds are further refined.

In 2020, STA revised and improved more than 10 enrollment management and supervision regulations based on the original system for each aspect of the enrollment examination for art majors, and newly formulated measures to deal with the occasional incidents in the examination venues, striving to manage and control the possible risks in the enrollment examination with a strict and effective system.

On the basis of strict implementation of the unified requirements of the Ministry of education and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission on the undergraduate enrollment examination for art majors, STA has actively increased innovative exploration, sorted out the key points of the enrollment examination work, and constantly pushed forward the examination arrangement mode featuring three random arrangements concerning the examination rooms, examinees and examination committee members. The three random arrangements are random arrangement of the examination room, random grouping and drawing of candidates, random selection and examination room distribution of examination committee members, aiming to ensure the randomness and fairness in the arrangement of on-site interviews.
