Shanghai Theatre Academy holds opening report meeting of a key philosophy and social science research project of Ministry of Education in 2019

On 9 November, the opening report meeting of “Research on the Discipline Construction of Dramaturgy with Chinese Characteristics”, a key philosophy and social science research project of the Ministry of Education in 2019, for which Professor Ye Changhai of Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) is the chief expert, was held. Eight well-known professors from Communication University of China, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, Suzhou University, Chinese National Academy of Arts, Central Academy of drama, Xiamen University and East China Normal University formed the expert panel for the opening report meeting, and Professor Zhou Huabin of Communication University of China served as the chair of the expert panel. A number of other well-known professors from National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Communication University of China and Shanghai Theatre Academy were also invited to attend the meeting.

On the morning of the 9th, the project team convened a meeting of the sub-project leaders in the Foxi Building of Shanghai Theatre Academy. Professor Huang Changyong, President of Shanghai Theatre Academy, attended the meeting and presented the letters of appointment to the sub-project leaders, including Professor Gu Chunfang of Peking University, Professor Yi Tianfu and Professor Lu Ang of Shanghai Theatre Academy.

On the afternoon of the 9th, the opening report meeting was held at the Merry Hotel Shanghai. Professor Chen Jun, Dean of Theatrical Literature Department, Shanghai Theatre Academy, presided over the opening session. Professor Huang Changyong, President of Shanghai Theatre Academy, and Professor Su Chen, Secretary General of Shanghai Education Society, delivered speeches.After the opening session, the opening report meeting officially began, which was presided over by Professor Zhou Huabin. On behalf of the project team, Professor Ye Changhai reported the main contents, implementation plan and expected outcomes of the project to the experts present at the meeting. This project will construct a complete theoretical system of dramaturgy as far as possible to promote the construction of a perfect dramaturgy education system in drama schools or departments of dramatic arts.After listening to Professor Ye Changhai's report, all members of the expert panel fully acknowledged the significance of this project, and agreed unanimously that the project team’s concept and ideas for the discipline construction of dramaturgy with Chinese characteristics are logical, reasonable and normative. At the same time, the experts also provided valuable opinions on the research ideas and research methods of this project. Subsequently, the representatives of the sub-project leaders and well-known professors attending the meeting gave their remarks.Professor Ye Changhai responded positively to the experts' valuable opinions, and Professor Zhou Huabin read out the resolution on behalf of the expert panel. The resolution of the expert panel stated that the expected goal of the project is high and the plan is feasible and the responsible organization, Shanghai Theatre Academy, can provide a strong guarantee for the completion of the tasks on time and with high quality. At the same time, it stated that because the research object of the project is complex and the research content involves all aspects of discipline construction, there is a great workload and considerable difficulty in both field investigation and theoretical improvement, so it is hoped that the project team will strengthen its resources and commence the substantive research as soon as possible according to the plan, so as to ensure the smooth progress and successful completion of the work. On behalf of the research team, Professor Ye Changhai thanked all the experts present at the meeting. Professor Liu Qing, Vice President of Shanghai Theatre Academy, made a wrap-up speech. In warm applause, the opening report meeting of the project was successfully concluded.

Research on the Discipline Construction of Dramaturgy with Chinese Characteristics is the second key project of the Ministry of Education headed by Professor Ye Changhai. In the next three years, Professor Ye Changhai and members of the project team will work together to carry out the research work of this project. It is believed that with their joint efforts, this project will produce fruitful research outcomes and contribute both efforts and wisdom to the discipline construction and development of dramaturgy in China.
