“The Merchant of Venice”, a play jointly presented by Shanghai Theatre Academy and Royal Shakespeare Company, will make its global premiere at Great Theatre of China in October

On the morning of 29 August, the press conference for the play “The Merchant of Venice” jointly presented by the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) was held at the Great Theatre of China in Shanghai. Huang Changyong, President of STA, David Thacker, director of the play from RSC and winner of Oliver Award Best Director Award and London Fringe Theatre Award Best Director Award, Jin Shijia (STA alumnus), Yu Bailei and Ayunga, famous actors and starts of the play, and all members of the cast mainly comprising current STA students and fresh STA graduates, attended the press conference.

This edition of The Merchant of Venice is the fourth work of The RSC Shakespeare Folio Translation Project launched by RSC in 2015. It is the first time that RSC has cooperated with a leading Chinese art university. Earlier, through The RSC Shakespeare Folio Translation Project, RSC has cooperated with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in presenting such masterpieces as “Henry V”, “King Lear” and “Hamlet”.

“The Merchant of Venice” is a world premiere customized for the Show Life – Great Theater of China 2019 International Theatre Invitational Exhibition. The International Theatre Invitational Exhibition has become one of the cultural brands of Shanghai and even the whole country after only two years. “The Merchant of Venice” will appear in the Show Life – Great Theatre of China 2019 International Theatre Invitational Exhibition from 4 to 7 October as the closing performance, and complete the world premiere of this edition of The Merchant of Venice.

Since its opening in June, the Great Theater of China 2019 International Theatre Invitational Exhibition has featured in the Asian or Chinese premieres of a number of plays such as Bald Girls, Odyssey, Dead Dog in a Suitcase and The Iliad etc, which have attracted the enthusiastic pursuit of the audiences time and again. In the golden autumn of October, audiences can see the finest squad of the play at the Great Theatre of China, i.e. the venue for the premiere of the planned performance tour of the STA-RSC edition of The Merchant of Venice. Its global premiere will mark the successful conclusion of the Show Life – Great Theatre of China 2019 International Theatre Invitational Exhibition.
