On the afternoon of 15 September 2017, the opening ceremony of the 1+3 undergraduate class for overseas study in art under the Shanghai Theatre Academy’s 2017 overseas joint education project was held at the New Space Theatre of the Huashan Road campus. The new students of the 2017 class and their parents totaling more than 80 people were present at the opening ceremony. Prof Gong Baorong, Vice President of Shanghai Theatre Academy and Mr Li Liwei, Executive Director, Concord Education Group attended the ceremony, together with the relevant persons-in-charge from the International Exchange Centre, International College and Overseas Joint Education Program of the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Vice President Gong Baorong gave a speech at the ceremony. He extended the warm welcome to all 44 new students of the 2017 class coming from all over China. Prof Gong said that the undergraduate class for overseas study in art of the Shanghai Theatre Academy aims to guide the motivated and committed young people onto the path leading to the palace of art in the pursuit of their artistic goals and, in the meantime, cultivate and produce creative artists and art and culture management professionals for the society. By 2017, the undergraduate class for overseas study in art of the Shanghai Theatre Academy has successfully collaborated with the City University London, University of London Goldsmiths College, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of South Wales of the United Kingdom, New York Film Academy and New York Institute of Technology of the USA, and UNITEC Institute of Technology of New Zealand in terms of bridging the source of students. In the future, the Shanghai Theatre Academy will connect and collaborate with more renowned art institutions in the view to providing the students of the Shanghai Theatre Academy with increased and more suitable options for overseas study in art.

Vice President Gong Baorong hoped that the students will fully utilize the high quality platform offered by the Shanghai Theatre Academy, enjoy the teaching and guidance from the team of professional teachers, experience the strong artistic and learning atmosphere of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and actively seek and grasp the opportunities to demonstrate their talents. He hoped that the student will make the Shanghai Theatre Academy the place where their dream starts to fulfill and achieve the motto that “Today I feel proud of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, tomorrow the Shanghai Theatre Academy will feel proud of me”.

Ms Zong Yu, Office Manager of the International College, advised the students that after entering into university, they should develop independence and initiative, have the courage to jump out of their comfort zone, open themselves up and explore the new knowledge. During the studies and in the daily life, the students should interact more with the others and improve the abilities of interpersonal communication and teamwork so as to lay a solid foundation for the overseas study later on and even the career development in the future. She suggested that the students should never be laid-back with their English learning while paying attention to improving the professional capabilities in art and, instead, the students should feel the fun of language and try to perceive the deep cultural connotation behind the language, as it is especially important to the students who have the inspiration to develop in the art industry. She expressed her earnest expectations to the students and, in the meantime, encouraged them to pursue their dream at the campus of the Shanghai Theatre Academy opening a new chapter of their life.

At last, the congratulatory messages from the overseas partner institutions were shown. The opening ceremony concluded successfully after a group photo of all participants.
