1.     Introduction to Chinese Visa
1).X visa type is a must for international students to enter China. Applicant may enter with L visa type (for tour), F visa type (for study) or no visas (some countries) if pressed for time, and then change residence permit accordingly.
2). Apply for Student X visa:  Applicant shall sign up and pay application fees. STA will issue acceptance letter and JW202 form by post within 2-3 weeks. With acceptance letter and JW202, and Physical Examination Record, applicant can apply for X visa in Chinese embassy or consulate. All students are required to have a valid ordinary visa to study in China.
2. Residence Permit and F visa Type
1).Applicant is required to change X visa into a residence permit before it expires after he or she enters China. The entries for a Residence Permit holder are unlimited. And in order to get a Residence Permit, applicant needs to present a certificate of Physical Examination Record from Shanghai Exit-entry Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
2). Applicant may apply for F visa if staying in China less than 6 months. With it, he or she is able to enter China several times. However, application fees may increase with visiting times and a certificate of Physical Examination Record is not necessary in the application.
3). At the beginning of each term, STA will attend to Residence Permit for all foreign students within a specified period. At other times, Students have to apply with relevant materials by themselves.
4). Out of personal reasons, students should be accountable for punishment of overstaying resulting from undue delay of application for Residence Permit

5).The expense of handling a residence permit is charged according to the validity of the residence permit at the following standards:
- Less than one year, 400 RMB;
- One to three years, 800 RMB;
- Three to five years, 1000 RMB.
 
3. Application Materials for Residence Permit
1.      Passport;
2.      One 2-inch photo (the size of passport photo);
3.      A Registration Form of Temporary Residence (ONLY for those who live outside campus);
4.      Physical Examination Record (It’s a must for applicants for the first time, not necessary for applicants whose Residence Permit has expired for less than 3 months);
5.      JW202 ( issued by STA after registration fee is paid);
6.      Acceptance letter ( issued by STA after registration fee is paid);
7.      An Introduction Letter for Foreign Students’ Visa and Residence Permit Application ( It’s filled by STA instead)

8.      A certificate of verification (issued by STA after registration fee is paid).
