On 27 April, the “Theatre and City: The Road to Innovation of Asia’s Performing Arts Capital – Theatre Summit Forum Shanghai 2019” was successfully held in the New Experimental Space Theatre of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA). This forum was a part of “Jing’an Modern Drama Valley Shanghai 2019”, and was jointly organized by STA and Jing’an District Culture and Tourism Bureau. The forum consisted of the keynote speeches in the morning and the parallel panel discussion in the afternoon.

In the morning, the forum was officially opened under the chairmanship of Huang Changyong, Deputy Party Secretary and President of STA. Bao Yingjing, Vice Mayor of Jing'an District People's Government, and Chen Yuren, Vice President of Shanghai Media Group (SMG), and Liu Qing, Vice President of STA, delivered speeches respectively. In the keynote speech session, Professor Sun Huizhu of STA, Helena Frnaces Gaunt, Principal of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) of UK, Theodoros Terzopoulos, the famous director from Greece, and teacher Wei Mei of the Acting Department of STA made wonderful presentations. Professor Scott Trost from USA, who teaches at the Acting Department of STA, even directly used an improvisation piece to let the guests at the forum directly experience and appreciate the charm of drama on the spot in an unexpected situation.

  

In the afternoon, the parallel panel discussion was held with Lu Ang, Dean of the Directing Department of STA as the moderator. The panelists included Yang Shaolin, President of the Shanghai Theatre Association, Lin Kai, famous producer of Chinese traditional opera, and Wang Hong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of “Shanghai Drama”, as well as Li Wei, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of “Dramatic Art”, He Yan, Dean of Acting Department, Dong Feng, Dean of Art Management Department, and Zhang Lei, lecturer of Art Management Department, from STA.

  

The wonderful talks given by the experts and scholars gave rise to rounds of applause from the audience. This forum not only highlighted the collision of ideas of domestic and foreign theatre workers and provided a good opportunity to discuss and share different ideas and achievements of artistic practice, but also is a festive occasion to celebrate theatre in view of truly integrating the theatrical art into the beautiful vision of future development.
