On the afternoon of 23 April 2019, the Department of Theatrical Literature of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) held a seminar on The Construction of Dramaturgy Major at the STA Library. Participants included Ye Changhai, Ding Luonan, Sun Huizhu, Gong Baorong, Shen Liang and Wei Mei. Members of the leadership of the Department of Theatrical Literature and teachers of related specialized courses also participated in the seminar. The meeting was chaired by Professor Chen Jun, Dean of the Department of Theatrical Literature.
“Dramaturgy Major” is a newly added undergraduate major in the Department of Theatrical Literature of STA. It is spun out of the Theory Specialization under the Theatre, Film and Television Literature Major, and is independently accredited. In the second half of this year, the first cohort of students will be enrolled with Tier 1 scores in the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao). How to enable students to acquire theatre skills and find their place in theatre industry through their four-year undergraduate study is an urgent and important topic for study.
The experts participating in the meeting put forward various rational recommendations regarding the construction of dramaturgy major. Finally, Chen Jun, Dean of the Department of Theatrical Literature concluded that it was necessary and timely to hold this seminar before the new “Dramaturgy Major begins to enroll students independently and that the insights of the experts had set the correct direction for the finalization of the new curriculum.
