As part of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA)’s internationalization process and with the view to helping the students broaden their horizons overseas, a 32-member delegation of STA teachers and students arrived in New York on 9 July 2014 for a three-week Film and New Media Summer Camp at the New York Film Academy (NYFA).

With nearly four months’ preparation, this summer camp was an important project of STA’s International Exchange Centre and attracted great interest from the students for participation. During the three-week summer camp, the 29 students had the opportunities to learn screenwriting, acting, photography and art, editing and special effects, film music creation, film making and management, micro-film creation, special effect art and new media etc. NYFA assigned experienced lecturers to teach the students. With the multimedia-based teaching, the students were encouraged to do things hands-on thus strengthening their practical skills.

This summer camp was a rewarding experience for all students involved. Apart from gaining exposure to and getting to know the cutting-edge professional knowledge, they visited the Ivy League universities such as Harvard and MIT, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Movie Art. They also observed a number of performances of musical theatre, modern drama and new media art at the Broadway. All these allowed the students to appreciate the characteristics and charm of the western culture and draw nourishment for their future artistic creation while broadening their vision and horizons.
