The 2nd Mandarin Art School Award National Youth Chinese Traditional Opera Competition was held at the Shenyang Normal University from 11 to 22 August 2014. The competition was sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Liaoning Provincial Government and hosted by the Shenyang Normal University, with the participation of a large number of contestants from 31 art schools all over China.

The Chinese Traditional Opera College of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) had six students qualified for the semi-finals of the Peking Opera, Kun Opera and Yue Opera. This year’s Mandarin Award competition clashed with the CCTV Peking Opera Competition. For this reason, the six STA students were divided into two groups with the Peking Opera students attending the CCTV competition and Kun Opera and Yue Opera students staying for the semi-finals of the Mandarin Art Award competition. Finally, Yao Xuyi, a Kun Opera student, outperformed the competitors with her excellent singing and refined and precise acting and qualified for the Kun Opera grand final to be held on the afternoon of 20 August.
