On 4 March 2014, the awards ceremony of 2013 Shanghai University Student of the Year was held at the Yifu Building of the East China University of Science and Technology. Qian Long, a 3rd year postgraduate student of the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) majoring in radio and television hosting, won the title of 2013 Shanghai University Student of the Year.

The election of Shanghai University Student of the Year is an initiative jointly launched by the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Shanghai Municipal Education and Public Health CPC Committee, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Municipal Youth League. Sponsored by the Shanghai Education Press Group and organized by the Oriental Education Times, it has been held for four consecutive years. The election of 2013 Shanghai University Student of the Year received 68 submissions from 42 tertiary institutions across Shanghai. The preliminary selection panel set up by the organizing committee shortlisted 20 candidates from the 68 submissions. After going through the further processes of online voting, on-campus voting and expert committee assessment, 10 students were finally elected for University Student of the Year and another 10 received the nomination award.

Among these award-winning students, some have devoted themselves to study and research and have won many honors and awards and owned many patents; some have taken the initiative to assume social responsibility by participating in community welfare activities, providing volunteer services or participating in volunteer teaching in the mountainous areas, fundraising for left-behind children; some have done heroic deeds and promoted righteousness.

These outstanding university students are full of positive power and reflect the socialist core values. They demonstrate the strong presence of university students of this generation in the pursuit of the Chinese Dream.

In his speech at the awards ceremony, Qian Long said, “I feel both familiar and strange walking up the stage. It is familiar because standing on the stage is something normal for me as a student from an art school. It is strange because these few steps going up the stage has made me realize the weight and value of this award and how much it urges me to do even better. Before today, the stage of art is my classroom. From today onward, I wish to do increasingly more on the stage of society and continue to show the meaningful and responsible presence of university students of our generation. I want to thank my university STA and, more importantly, I want to thank this era that belongs to you and me.
